THE RESCUE TEAM

“Carfentanil sedative darts,” Berman said, holding up a transparent delivery syringe inches in front of Michael's face. “Capable of sedating large animals like elephants with ease. Also a deadly street drug. To safely take down an animal the size of the deinosuchus, it's our best shot, since you're holding us hostage to not use our shotguns.”

Michael gently pushed the dart away from his face.

“Sorry, Jeff. The animal is protected by law. I figured you as a police officer would understand that.”

The dart looked like the stereotypical poison dart seen in crime films or animal documentaries – a long, glossy tube with a sharp metallic needle on one end and a red puffy plume on the other. Berman took the dart and safely shoved it back into the foam laden Pelican case, setting it on the table before producing another sealed compartment. He unlatched the opening, revealing a pair of long rifles. He picked one up and handed it hastily to Michael.

“Pneu-Dart branded G2 X-Caliber tranquilizer projectile,” Berman said, giving Michael a brief run through of the safety functions and trigger features. “I shouldn't really be giving you one of these.”

“I'll be careful,” Michael said, annoyed that Berman was trying to sound like a weapons expert, while treating him like a child who just discovered his father's shotgun.

“You better.”

There was something odd about Berman. He moved a little sluggishly, and his eyes were narrow, beyond tired. Michael suspected that he may have been drunk, detecting a faint whiff of liquor when Berman spoke, but kept his theory to himself.

The two of them were going over supplies and safety protocols below the cabin near where Michael and Mila were supposedly to sleep that night. Outside the open door ahead, they could see Sheraton waiting near the Anglerfin stern, preparing the motorboat for another trek to the land while doing a maintenance check on the departure craft.

“You're gonna need this too,” Berman said, handing Michael a dark blue rain-slicker before putting one on himself.

“Thanks,” Michael said. “Good thinking.”

“We're going too,” Adrienne yelled, running down the interior stairs with Graham behind her. They were already dressed in rain gear and armed with their G2s.

“You may need some backup.”

“Unless it's anything underwater,” Graham said sternly. “Land rescue operations only!”

“Like anyone would volunteer to go down there anyway after we all got a good look at the son of a bitch,” Adrienne commented. “I wouldn't go near that thing with a ten foot pole.”

“Are you sure?” Michael said. He remembered the fright in her eyes when she saw the deinosuchus for the first time, watching as the indomitable reptile almost tore Berman's leg apart. It wasn't the face of someone he'd expect to want to go out during a monsoon over a swamp full of alligators.

She nodded, firmly zipping up the rain slicker.

“Don't make me change my mind,” she reprimanded him.

“Plus, it's Dawson's orders,” Graham smiled. Adrienne struck him on the shoulder for exposing her lie.

“Let's just get on with it,” she urged, heading down the hall to the stern outside.
